課程概述

Designed to sharpen sophomore English majors’ academic English writing, this one-year course will guide them through the steps involved in writing a composition. It will introduce the basic components of a five-paragraph essay, various genres of writing, as well as rhetorical and argument-building strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the skills and strategies they have learned in a variety of writing tasks, including a piece of autobiography, summaries and short-responses based on various topics, as well as five-paragraph essays (descriptive, compare and contrast, argumentative, rhetorical analysis). Throughout the course, students will have to revise drafts, give feedback to their peers, and move from expressing personal opinions and relating events to analyzing issues and building arguments.

課程目標
At the end of this course, students will be able to
1) consolidate the basic components and structures of writing they have learned in English Composition.
2) build up their writing skills, such as the ability to summarize and paraphrase efficiently and accurately.
3) become familiar with various types of writing, and rhetorical strategies commonly used in academic contexts
4) employ complex sentence structures in a five-paragraph essay.
5) write in a clear, concise style.
